Taiwan distributes rice in Kiribati

Taiwan has donated 200 tonnes of rice to Kiribati to help relieve a food shortage.

Taiwan's Minister of Foreign Affairs says the rice, handed over to the Kiribati government on Christmas Eve, is intended for distribution to hospitals, clinics and public boarding schools.

The Government says it demonstrates Taiwan's care and friendship for the people of Kiribati.

Food costs have been soaring this year in Kiribati, which is forced to import much of its food.

Kiribati is one of six nations in the Pacific that grant diplomatic recognition to Taiwan.
