Papua New Guinea's police commissioner is complaining over an article reporting that Port Moresby is one of the murder capitals of the world.

An article in Foreign Policy Magazine's list PNG's capital as the fifth murder capital of the world behind Venezuela's Caracas, Cape Town in South Africa, New Orleans in the US, and Russia's Moscow.

Gari Baki says he was shocked and upset over the listing and says it is simply not true.

Mr Baki says the annual nation-wide figure is much less than the 54 murders the magazine quotes.

He says the report is grossly unfair, and sets back the many positive developments taking place within the country.

However, Gari Baki acknowledges PNG has a serious law and order problem, but denies its problems can be compared with the four major cities Port Moresby was listed with.
