Solomons government outlines additional school funding

1:16 pm on 12 January 2009

The Solomon Islands government says it will give additional grants over the subsidised school fees in support of its free education policy.

The government initiative will mean free education from pre-school to form 3 or Year 9.

The grants include administration grants and remote areas schools.

The Head of the Education department responsible for the grants, Aseri Yalagona, says early child education will receive 500 Solomon Islands dollars per centre.

"For primary schools, 2,500 dollars per school, for community high schools, 5000 dollars per school per year and for national and provincial secondary schools 8,000."

Meanwhile, the deputy Speaker of Parliament, Clement Kengava, says the policy needs to be developed into an Act of Parliament so that successive governments are obliged to fund the free education system and respect it.
