A flood appeal has been launched in Fiji to raise funds to help victims of the country's devastating floods.

The ANZ bank in Fiji and the Fiji Times newspaper have jointly organised the appeal, that was launched yesterday.

The ANZ general manager in Fiji, Robert Bell, says the bank started the appeal with an about US$6000 donation, and the Fiji Times donated almost US $ 3000.

"ANZ and the Fiji Times are kicking off the appeal but its a general appeal to Fiji Times readers, and the money will actually be donated to the Red Cross, who are in the best position in Fiji to help flood victims."

Robert Bell says people can give a donation at any ANZ bank branch in Fiji.

Meanwhile, Australia says it will provide immediate aid of 100,000 US dollars to the Red Cross and Fiji's disaster management office.
