A former Solomon Islands MP and prime minister, who has just completed a jail sentence, Sir Allan Kemakeza, plans to contest the next general election in 2010.

Kemakeza had been jailed for six months for a 2002 attack on a Honiara law firm.

The speaker of parliament, Sir Peter Kenilorea, has said that Sir Allan has ceased to be a member of parliament following his conviction and jail sentence.

Kemakeza says he lodged an appeal against his conviction in September and is still waiting for its outcome.

He says he plans to remain in politics in the long term.

"In 2010 certainly I'm going to contest in my constituency, in the meantime, I'm not sure, I leave that to my lawyers to deal with."
