Samoa government awaits village decision on cash power meter project

11:44 am on 15 January 2009

Samoa's Electric Power Corporation is in a stand off with Magiagi village, a suburb of Apia, over the government's cash power meters installation project.

Most families are rejecting the programme.

One hundred households of Magiagi received free electricity as part of an agreement with the government from the 1980s, since the village water resources were used to generate power.

But this is now likely to change.

The government has reportedly offered to pay some compensation for the village resources such as land if locals in the village accept they have to pay their power bills and have cash power meters put in their homes.

A meeting between the minister and the village council over the matter has resulted in some proposals.

However, the Minister of Works, Tuisugaletaua Sofara Aveau, denies any mention of the 28 year-old free power supply agreement during the meeting.

The minister says the village council should come up with a decision in early February in another meeting.
