Tonga set to extend emergency powers this weekend

4:08 pm on 15 January 2009

The Tongan Government is waiting for police advice before extending for the application of emergency powers in parts of the capital Nuku'alofa for another month.

The regulations give the police wider powers within a designated zone within the city, which lost much of its CBD when rioters started fires during an anti-government protest in November 2006.

The Prime Minister's Office says the powers need to be extended by Saturday the 17th, and it is waiting on advice from the police minister.
