Former Fiji GCC chairman Bokini dies

2:26 pm on 16 January 2009

The former chairman of Fiji's Great Council of Chiefs, Ratu Ovini Bokini, has died at the age of 64.

Fiji media reports say it is understood Ratu Ovini had been ill for some time.

Ratu Ovini, who was from the village of Tavualevu, held the chiefly title of Tui Tavua.

He had been a member of the House of Representatives in the early 1990s and served under the SVT government.

Ratu Ovini and other chiefs refused to accept the military commander's claim to the presidency after the 2006 coup.

Four months later Ratu Ovini was stripped of the chairmanship when Commodore Bainimarama suspended the Council.
