Tonga emergency rule extended

1:32 pm on 19 January 2009

Tonga has extended the state of emergency powers for parts of the capital Nuku'alofa for another month.

The regulations give the police wider powers within a designated zone in city, which lost much of its CBD during anti-government riots in November 2006.

The acting chief secretary to the government, Paula Mau, says the emergency regulations have been renewed for another 30 days.

According to Mr Mau, police say the regulation is needed as a precautionary measure.
