PNG to give Fiji US$0.5 million in flood relief assistance

Papua New Guinea says it will give Fiji more than half a million US dollars in flood relief assistance.

The prime minister, Sir Michael Somare, says as members of the Melanesian Spearhead Group and the Pacific Island Forum, they must assist one another during each other's difficult times.

Sir Michael says to save lives, quick action is needed and therefore he has asked for the release of the funds from the National Disaster and Emergency Services.

He says according the Fiji Weather Bureau, the bad weather will prevail for at least another three to four weeks.
