Special Fiji police join flood relief effort

2:35 pm on 23 January 2009

More than 50 police officers from Fiji's Ready Action Unit have been dispatched to assist in flood stricken areas.

30 officers have been sent to the Western Division, and more than 25 to Northern Divisions.

Police Spokeswoman Ema Mua says they will help disaster relief agencies and strengthen security and maintain law and order.

"Not necessarily linked to the wake of the recent floods. It has been an intent that the Commissioner had put in place from last year that the ready action unit have teams to be dispatched early this year. And it is just fortunate that that intent has now been put in place and also is now compensating for the floods."

Ema Mua says the unit will allow police officers to return to the day to day jobs.
