12:19 pm on 27 January 2009

The Sixth International Pacific Documentary Film Festival will be held in French Polynesia this week.

Sixteen movies from the Pacific region have been shortlisted for the event, which will run for five days at the Papeete Cultural Centre.

Twenty-one documentaries that did not enter the competition will also be shown.

The director of the event, Pierre Olivier, says the films stem from many countries and are wide ranging.

"We have a lot of topics. It's very diverse. We have a lot of portraits and historical films and a lot of films with archive."

Pierre Olivier says the most important criteria for the films are the quality of the script and the shots.
