New Zealand's prime minister says Forum leaders need to show the way

12:41 pm on 27 January 2009

The New Zealand prime minister, John Key, says it is the job of the Pacific Islands Forum to pressure Fiji to return to a democratic form of government.

A special Forum leaders meeting will go ahead in Papua New Guinea this afternoon to discuss Fiji's refusal to have elections by March as promised to them in Tonga in 2007.

Mr Key says Forum leaders need to show the way.

"I don't want to prejudge the outcome might be but I think the various leaders I have spoken to recognise the importance, recognise that there's a need for the Forum to act and show leadership."

The leaders will consider a range of options, including the possible and unprecedented step to suspend Fiji's Forum membership.
