The Fiji-Australia Business Council says the removal of Fiji Times publisher, Rex Gardner, from the country was a major setback in trying to create a climate of investor confidence at a time of uncertainty.

Council President, Wylie Clarke said this cannot be the interim Government's reaction to people it does not approve of."

Fiji's Law Society president, Dorsami Naidu said the action by the interim Government was a sad day for democracy in Fiji.

He said if a person was on a work permit in the country and had breached his work permit, there were processes to be followed allowing the to present his case in court.

He told the Fiji Times that this was a draconian way of doing things, where the order is given in the evening when the courts are closed.
