CNMI offers alternative to Guantanamo for US

8:02 pm on 28 January 2009

The Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas is reportedly making an offer to the US government to set up a detention centre there, after the announced closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention centre.

Representative Ray Yumul is proposing the US government build a similar facility in the CNMI, after President Barack Obama ordered the closure of the Guantanamo facility within the year.

During yesterday's House of Representatives session, Mr Yumil says he would prepare a resolution stating the CNMI is willing to host detainees.

He says its a good opportunity to provide for the services of national security and the protection of Americans, as well as bring in resources and income for the Northern Mariana's weakening economy.

The Saipan Tribune reports him saying that questions concerning the safety of hosting detainees should not be an issue.
