The American Samoa Treasury department has released 1.4 million US dollars in tax refunds from 2008.
Tax Office Manager, Melvin Joseph, says the 600 cheques issued were the first batch of refunds released for the last tax year.
There were 600 cheques, and a total of 860,000 dollars worth of Additional Child Tax Credits paid by the Internal Revenue Service.
Businesses are also welcoming the refund to help them recover from the slump in sales expected for the first quarter of 2009.
