The Fiji weather office says Tropical Cyclone Hettie poses no direct threat to Fiji.

The Director of Meteorology, Rajendra Prasad, told Fiji Live that Hettie was located about 200 kilometres southeast of Ono-I-Lau at 5 this morning and was moving at 16 kilometres per hour.

He says the Cyclone does not pose any direct threat to Fiji but will cause strong winds in the southern parts of the country.

Mr Prasad says strong winds were expected throughout the country with occasional showers.

He says heavy rain and squally thunderstorms can be expected in southern and eastern Viti Levu.

Occasional showers are also predicted for Kadavu, Lau and the Lomaiviti groups.

Mr Prasad says the weather was expected to clear up over the weekend.
