European Union yet to decide on Fiji

11:18 am on 29 January 2009

The European Union says it's yet to decide whether the apparent lack of progress by Fiji's interim regime towards holding elections will mean it withdrawing funding from Fiji's sugar industry.

The charge d'affaire for the European Commission in New Zealand, George Cunningham, says they're disappointed over the non-attendance by Fiji's interim Prime Minister at this week's special Pacific Islands Forum leaders in Port Moresby.

Mr Cunningham, who says they are currently studying the communiqué from the meeting, says the EU's basic position on the Fiji situation remains in support of the Forum line that Fiji must hold democratic elections as soon as possible.

He says the conditions the EU itself imposed on Fiji in terms of sugar industry funding being linked to Fiji's progress towards democracy remain valid.

"We have an eight million euro disbursement after 2008 based on progress towards legitimate elections... At the moment we are still encouraging the Commodore towards go to elections and this continues to be the enticement for him to do that."

George Cunningham.
