The Police Commissioner in the Marshall Islands wants a three-month academy training programme for his officers to be ongoing.
The academy, to begin in June, is being organised with the Australian Federal Police to address the national force's almost complete lack of formal training.
Commissioner George Lanwi says the officers in the outer islands are especially poorly equipped to do their jobs.
"Every time we go out there to investigate a case the case is clearly not dealt with by the local police or they did not know how to do it. Those are the things that are problems of my department."
Commissioner Lanwi says he receives about fifteen police complaints a month but he's confident the training will help his officers do their jobs more responsibly.
