American Samoa opens women's jail

A prison in American Samoa for female inmates has opened.

The Governor Togiola Tulafono said at the dedication ceremony that the facility serves was a place where offenders were taken care of with compassion.

He told the inmates not to be too comfortable in their new home but to make changes in their lifes and attitudes so that they could become law abiding citizens and return to their own homes and families.

The US$817,000 two story building includes ten cells, an administration office, visiting area, kitchen and dining area.

It currently houses seven inmates.
