Dissolution of municipal copuncils is illegal, says Fiji Law Society head

The president of Fiji Law Society, Dorsami Naidu, says the move by the military led administration to dissolve local municipal councils is illegal.

The interim government has decided in a bid to clean up corruption, mayors and councillors would lose their jobs, and town clerks would become Chief Executive Officers.

Government-appointed administrators will be appointed to assist the CEO's this month.

Mr Naidu says the interim regime is going about the wrong way if it's trying to clean up corruption, claiming that its latest move will make it worse.

"It's just going to lead to greater corruption because the councils are the ones who handle the designation of certain services in a lot of areas within a municipality and they are also in control of large funding and money through rates, and how that is spent is the other thing. They're not answerable."

Dorsami Naidu says the latest development shows just how unstable the regime is and how it's not good for democracy.

He says saying it is on the president's promulgation is stretching the truth.
