All Fiji disaster development funds diverted to flood relief

Persistent rain is hampering relief efforts in flood-hit areas of Fiji, forcing the diversion of all disaster development funds into the ongoing emergency.

The principal disaster management officer, Bajiliai Dobui, says some areas in the north like the main thoroughfare, the Kings Road, will flood again if the weather does not clear soon.

"Most of our infrastructure [was] affected, the roads, the electricity, and telecommunications systems as well as our bridges, some of the small bridges some of the crossings, that is something that we will have to work on to allow free movement of traffic around the country."

Bajiliai Dobui says the continuous bad weather has kept some villages isolated and hindered the delivery of food rations in some areas.
