The Red Cross in Fiji says aid from New Zealand will be crucial in helping the country recover from massive flooding.

The Government is to give an extra 1.5 million US dollars for relief efforts, channelled through a variety of non-governmental organisations.

The Prime Minister, John Key, says the cost of damage caused by last month's floods in Fiji is now estimated to be about 42 million US dollars.

Vuli Gauna, the Red Cross disaster co-ordinator, says the payment will help the country recover by providing hygiene supplies to avoid disease.

He says the funding will also help the community to be better prepared for disasters.
