Air Tahiti Nui drops routes to consolidate operation

1:11 pm on 3 February 2009

French Polynesia's international carrier has decided to drop some destinations in the face of the global economic problems.

Air Tahiti Nui will stop flying to New York and Osaka, after announcing earlier that the direct flights to Sydney were to be dropped.

This means that the airline, which has five Airbus 340 aircraft, will only fly to Auckland, Tokyo, Los Angeles and Paris.

This also comes amid a decline in Tahiti visitor numbers, with the 2008 figure dropping below the 200,000 mark for the first time since 2002.
