9:39 am on 4 February 2009

The Solomon Islands Minister for Home Affairs will today declare the flood-affected areas of Guadalcanal disaster areas.

This follows a meeting last night at which the National Disaster Council decided that the zone hit by heavy rain and severe flooding were to be declared disaster areas.

The government is providing more than 200,000 US dollars worth of emergency relief supplies in its initial help to the people of Guadalcanal affected by the bad weather.

The Disaster Management Office said the death toll from the recent floods has risen to nine, including one fatality on Savo island.

Among those killed is a foreign logging worker who was swept away after attempting to cross a flooded river.
