The Cook Island Rugby sevens team is aiming for a good start to the Wellington leg of the International Rugby Sevens to win its first game in its pool where it will face up against teams like Fiji and Samoa.

The Cook Islands will play Samoa first up, and new coach Ramsay Tomokino is hoping they'll take advantage of the Samoan's slow start.

"First game traditionally Samoa aren't as strong they ease into the competition and I guess the good thing for us also is they've come off two good wins so hopefully I'm thinking their mindset might be oh this is the Cook Islands that will be a training run for us but if anyone takes us lightly be careful."

Tomokino hopes as a result of discipline, good team work and players individual talents the side will be a tough competitor.
