The leader of French Polynesia's Fetia Api Party, Philip Schyle, has called for fresh elections to end the political deadlock.
Mr Schyle made the call on RFO radio after the government lost its majority and a new opposition coalition appears to falter over who should be the candidate to seek to replace President Gaston Tong Sang.
A no confidence motion has been discussed and the opposition Union For Democracy has nominated its leader, Oscar Temaru, as candidate for the presidency, prompting his erstwhile opposition partner, Gaston Flosse, to say that such a choice would be anti-democratic.
Mr Flosse's party will meet tonight to discuss the situation.
In the past year, the territory has had three governments.
