The National Council of Women in Solomon Islands is calling on women to help victims in the flood affected areas of Guadalcanal and Savo Island.

Weeks of rain has caused widespread flooding and claimed at least ten lives, while hundreds of houses and gardens have been destroyed.

The Council's general-secretary, Ella Kauhue, says people in the flood-stricken areas need additional help despite the relief provided by Government bodies and NGOs.

"I'm really looking at if people can help the National Council of Women to just helping women supporting women and I think it would be good if they could bring in, you know, rice, clothing, kerosene.... what ever... and if they have cash they can also bring it in but I'm encouraging them to really buy something before coming in."
