Catholic church says refugee discussion in Solomons timely

The Catholic Church in Solomon Islands says discussions about the country's future dealing with refugees and asylum seekers are timely.

The UNHCR and the Solomons commerce ministry are holding a seminar on this issue, with the immigration minister telling the workshop that the Solomons do not have any legislation governing refugees.

The archbishop of Honiara, Adrian Smith, says the country has faced many natural disasters and needs to learn how to deal with internally displaced people.

"It's very timely because of the internal situation that the country is facing. There's going to be a need for those areas which have safe land to be ready to welcome the people from the low lying islands and atolls."

Adrian Smith expects there'll be many climate refugees from low lying Pacific countries, who could seek a new home in the Solomons.
