The director of the New Zealand Speight's Coast to Coast multi-sport event says he wants to see more competitors from Pacific Island countries enter.

The annual event involves swimming, kayaking and cycling over a distance of about 243-kilometres in the centre of the South Island..

Robin Judkins says it only received one Pacific entry this year, from Papua New Guinea's Daniel Cowley, but he says he's working harder to entice more Pacific country involvement in future.

"Well I'm hopeful that we'll pick up more competitors from Polynesia and from the South Pacific. I try very hard to get competitors from New Caledonia which has quite a background in multi-sport. I'd really really like to get competitors from Fiji because those are the sort of people I'd like to see in this event, maybe even from Tahiti."

Robin Judkins says about 100 people have enter this year's event that ends tomorrow (Saturday NZ time) .
