A Tongan man described as the ringleader in the destruction of a supermarket during riots in the Tonga capital in November 2006, has been jailed for 11 years..

Matangi Tonga website reports that Vilisoni Tauelangi was jailed on two charges of riotous assembly and the destruction of buildings by rioters, namely the Molisi Tonga Supermarket.

Tauelangi had poured petrol over goods and set fire to it.

The Chief Justice Tony Ford says the evidence showing Tauelangi set fire to Molisi was overwhelming and the jurors were correct in finding him guilty of the destruction.

He told the court there was no doubt that Tauelangi was the ringleader in the destruction of the supermarket.
