A trade unionist in Fiji says language used by the Police Commissioner in a lecture to his officers was abusive and demeaning.
There have been calls within the community for the Commissioner, Esala Teleni to be removed, after making statements referring to staff as cowards, disloyal officers and backstabbers.
The Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions General secretary and Movement for Democracy in Fiji Chairman Attar Singh says he viewed the television footage of Mr Teleni making the comments and says they were inappropriate.
"In my position as a humanist I see the police as a work place no different from any other. These people are all public servants and if there was to be any issue with indiscipline, there are ways of doing it. And whatever is done, people must be given their right to respect and to dignity."
Attar Singh says he has asked for Mr Teleni to be removed as Police Commissioner.
