Funding options looked at in Cook Islands for synthetic athletics track

The Cook Islands Minister of Finance is expected to begin discussing funding options for the synthetic athletics track destined for Tereora National Stadium.

Sir Terepai Moate was asked by Cabinet last week to identify where the funds to cover the cost of the track and an all-weather bowling green for the Rarotonga Bowling Club in Tutakimoa, could come from.

Sir Terepai says caution must be taken to choose the best option.

The Cook Islands Investment Corporation Minister. Tangata Vavia says the government is backing the development because it believes upgrading these facilities will be beneficial to the economy.

He says the success of the annual Vaka Eiva outrigger canoeing event is an example of an international sporting event in the Cook Islands that has grown significantly over recent years and contributed enormously to the economy.
