Custom fee hikes a surprise to some in American Samoa

Business owners in American Samoa have expressed surprise over the increase in some Customs fees in the middle of this month.

Some businesses say they had no advanced warning from the Treasury Department's Customs Division.

The fee increases were part of an administration bill to overhaul and strengthen the Customs Division, approved by the Fono during the December special session.

The Bill was signed into law early last month by the Governor, Togiola Tulafono.

A provision of the law nearly doubles in some cases, fees collected for the services of customs officers from the owner, master or agency of a vessel, including an air carrier.
