Hawaii closer to passing civil union law

Hawaii is again considering a civil union bill after a 2007 public poll seemed to indicate public opinion had changed.

House Bill 444 is the civil union bill that would extend the civil rights of marriage to couples of the same sex.

The measure was passed by the state House this month but it now faces the Senate, where a divided committee is to vote on the matter on February 24th.

The state's first attempt to pass civil union legislation was 12 years ago but conservative Christian groups formed a coalition that saw some of the Legislature's most liberal members purged.
