The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group will meet in London this week to discuss the situation in Fiji whose interim regime is yet to set an election date following the 2006 military coup.
The gathering comes a month after the special Pacific Islands Forum summit in Papua New Guinea threatened Fiji with Forum membership suspension should the interim regime fail to set a 2009 election date by May the 1st.
The New Zealand foreign minister, Murray McCully, who will be at the London meeting, says he hopes the Commonwealth will support the position taken by the Forum.
"I think it is very desirable in matters that the region has in its grasp, like this, that leadership is respected by both the Commonwealth and the United Nations and that's certainly a point I will be making to ministers."
The Fiji interim regime wants to change the electoral system before holding elections and relinquishing power.
