The president of the Fiji Law Society says a United States report that criticises the country's human rights record is balanced and not sensationalised.

The 2008 US State Department report accuses the interim government of interfering with the judiciary, intimidating the media and a lack of progress towards holding elections.

Law Society President Dorsami Naidu says its an accurate reflection of the situation on the ground in Fiji, and if anything it could have been more hard-hitting

"Especially in regards to the Human Rights Commissioner, because she is sympathetic or part of the coup she does not entertain any complaints by people who are affected by the coup or the regime which is in charge."

Dorsami Naidu says the report could also have been more criticial of the Interim Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khayum who he says seems to regard his position as legitimate.
