American Samoa Government owes troubled power utility millions

4:39 pm on 2 March 2009

The American Samoa government owes close to four million US dollars in electricity charges to the American Samoa Power Authority.

The Authority's chief financial officer, Francis Leasiolagi, told a Senate committee that his organisation keeps trying to collect the outstanding debt.

Senator Velega Savali, a former government treasurer, says the Budget Office allocates only half a million US dollars a year to pay electricity when the actual cost is up to three million annually.

Mr Savali, who chairs the Senate committee which oversees the Power Authoritiy says he will do all he can to make sure the Government allocates the appropriate amount in future.
