American Samoa Power Authority criticises government

10:15 am on 13 March 2009

The American Samoa Power Authority has blamed both the Fono and the Executive Branch for failure to appropriate the necessary funds to pay the government's electric bill

Testimonies in the Fono recently revealed that the government owes US$3.9 million in utility costs.

ASPA board says despite its relentless pursuit of payment and on several occasions over the past two years, management has presented the board with recommendations to disconnect ASG meters.

But the power authority's board says disconnecting the government would literally result in shutting down the island economy.

Lawmakers had raised concerns about the inadequate funding proposal to cover the government's electricity and water costs during the FY 2009 budget review last year, but no changes were made to ensure utility costs were covered.
