Papua promotion office opens in Frankfurt

An office aimed at promoting the Indonesian region of Papua among members of the European Union has opened in Frankfurt, Germany.

The Jakarta Post reports that the Papua Promotion House Europe, or PPHE, has been officially opened by the Governor of Papua province, Barnabas Suebu.

The PPHE is intended to serve as a one-stop information center about Papua for European Union residents and, according to Governor Suebu, hasn't been set up for political reasons.

The Governor says the initiative is part of efforts to increase cooperation in tourism, socio-culture, trade and investment in his remote region.

Mr Suebu says the establishment of such an office in Frankfurt is a recognition of the historical links between Germany and West Papua, describing two German missionaries - Ottow and Geissler - as the first to bring Papua from the primitive era to modernity in the 1850s.
