Solomons Health Minister punched outside parliament

7:34 pm on 16 March 2009

The Solomon Islands health minister has been punched in the face as he walked out of the parliament building in the capital Honiara.

The Solomon Star newspaper reports that Johnson Koli was hit in the face by a man believed to be from his constituency.

It is believed the attacker, who is now in police custody, was an ex-militant from Guadalcanal's Marau Sound region.

Parliament House clerk Taeasi Sanga said it's the first such incident to have happened at parliament.

She said that in Solomons culture, they cannot stop a close relative or constituent from seeing their MP.
