The police in Fiji say an investigation into a 16-year-old's possession of a hand pistol, silencer and bullets is now in the hands of the Military.

A police spokesperson, Ema Mua, says the incident happened at a Suva high school last week.

She says police were alerted by the school's principal after the student was seen showing off his gun in school grounds.

Ms Mua says the 16-year-old told police how he came to have the gun.

"(The) child said that it was given to him by his Father... that is the report that we have. Now his Father is said to be serving in Iraq at the moment.... I think his Father had also resigned from the Military, I'm not quite sure. But police have conducted their investigation and we have closed it and we have given the file to the Military for further analysis."

Ema Mua expects the Military will now try to find out how the gun came to be in the Father's possession.
