Bill proposed in American Samoa to use off shore accounts to pay hospital debts

A bill introduced this morning in American Samoa's House of Representatives proposes tapping into funds in government off island accounts to pay overruns in the hospital off- island medical referral programme.

The bill would appropriates US$5 million from the government Insurance Proceeds account to pay for debts.

The hospital CEO, Patricia Tindall, testified at house hearing yesterday that they budgeted $5.2 million for the programme in fiscal year 2009 but only $1 million was approved.
