The mother of a 19-year-old man who died after an assault while in military custody in Fiji says she's relieved the nine men responsible will be sent to prison for four years and four months.

Sakiusa Rabaka died in February 2007, a month after he and a group of friends were detained.

Eight soldiers and a policeman were found guilty of manslaughter and five counts of assault, occasioning actual bodily harm.

The 19-year-old's mother, Alanieta Rabaka, says she left it to the law to decide the men's fate because they didn't come forward and apologise to her for their actions.

"I am happy that they will be serving their sentence in jail now and justice has prevailed. We've been waiting for a long time and I had hoped that the men would come to me and apologised because of what had happened two years (ago), and they never came. And so I had left it for the court to decide."
