Dengue infections continue to climb in New Caledonia

The number of people suffering from dengue in New Caledonia continues to climb, with more than 3000 now being infected.

Dengue is transmitted by day-biting mosquitoes and one person has died from the disease in the territory this year.

The Secretariat of the Pacific Community's communicable disease surveillance specialist, Dr Justus Benzler, says dengue is also a problem in other areas.

"We have a large outbreak in New Caledonia with 3700 cases. In French Polynesia an outbreak has officially been declared last week, outbreaks are also ongoing in Fiji, American Samoa, Samoa, Vanuatu and there're some cases in Wallis and Futuna."

Dr Justus Benzler says people should empty all water containers around their homes and see a doctor if they suffer from fever with head-and musle pain.
