Palau senior official gets jail time

12:14 pm on 19 March 2009

In Palau, the Speaker of the Koror State government found guilty of three counts of perjury and three counts of misconduct in public office has been sentenced to six years in prison, and ordered to pay a 10,000 US dollar fine.

However, the paper, Palau Horizon, says Timothy Uehara also known as Tero Uehara will serve only 12 months in jail, after associate Justice Kathleen Salii suspended the sentence except for the 12 months.

Uehara will serve the remainder of his sentence on supervised probation.

Justice Salii sentenced him to six years imprisonment for each conviction for the perjury charges which will run concurrently with his six year jail term for the misconduct in public office.

Uehara was convicted in January 23, 2009 for perjury and misconduct in public office.

The government at the time said the defendant should return the money he took to the Koror State Government or Koror State Public Lands Authority.
