Worry over sole remaining prisoner in Pitcairn's prison

3:18 pm on 19 March 2009

A California researcher says the Govenor of Pitcairn Island should release the sole remaining prisoner because of health concerns.

Eight men were convicted of a string of sex attacks on girls as young as 12 on the remote island, Brian Young is the last remaining prisoner.

Herbert Ford from the California based Pitcairn Islands Study Centre, says the man has diabetes and he is concerned about the psychological effect of solitary confinement.

Mr Ford says the prisoner should be allowed to return to his home on the island where he can be better cared for.

He says the man is not a danger to anyone, and is calling on the Governor of Pitcairn Island, who is based in Wellington, to release him.
