Fiji health centres to extend open hours to cut patient queues

8:24 pm on 19 March 2009

Two health centres in in Suva and Nausori, Fiji, are extending their opening hours during the week to help relieve issues like patient waiting times.

Under the Ministry of Health, Valelevu and Makoi health centres are trialing the new programme which sees their doors open from 6am to 10pm.

A spokesperson at the Ministry, Iliesa Tora says it's set up the pilot because of complaints about hospital waiting times.

He says its encouraging people near the two centres to use their service.

"Basically what we're trying to do is get members of the public to use the health centres at these two places at the moment, so that the major hospitals, the CWM and Nausori are freed up to look at emergency cases or urgent cases."

Iliesa Tora says the pilot scheme will be on trial for three-months before the scheme could be rolled out to other health centres.
