French Polynesia's tourism industry suffers a series of setbacks

French Polynesia's tourism industry has suffered a series of setbacks in the past few days with the announcements of withdrawals from several key actors in the crucial tourism industry.

The latest announcement comes from world class organisation Club Med, which has strongly hinted that its resort on Bora Bora island would have to be closed.

It says some 80 staff would also have to be laid off.

In an announcement last week, Club Med said the decision was motivated by a significant drop in tourism arrivals and what has been described as an insufficient occupancy rate in French Polynesia.

Last month, one of the flagships of the cruising industry in French Polynesia, the four-mast Star Flyer luxury liner, also announced its withdrawal from the French Polynesia.
