The Head of the Catholic Church of Fiji and Rotuma Archbishop Petero Mataca has tendered his resignation letter to Pope Benedict XVI.

"He told the Fiji Sun that the role of an Archbishop ends when they reach 75 years which he did last year"

Archbishop Mataca emphasised that he had resigned from office, but not from his role within the Catholic Church and said he would continue on until a replacement was found and confirmed by the Vatican.
